16:00: We are happy to start our creative line-up with a special book reading by Joe Baur, author of the recently released travelogue Talking Tico: (Mis)adventures of a Gringo in and Around Costa Rica. The book is a travel narrative with history, culture, opinion, and of course, humor about the author’s travels in Costa Rica, one of the most sought after vacation destinations in the Americas with some of the world’s most attractive natural surroundings teeming with wildlife. While most visitors spend years saving up for a trip of a lifetime, or perhaps even a honeymoon, Baur decided to move there for ten months to get a closer look at life in and around Costa Rica. His experiences, alongside the history of the region (as he travels throughout Costa Rica with stops in Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala) showcase xenophobic expatriates, delicious food, vibrant market scenes, an epic battle with Mothra, and inevitable culture clashes that all make for an entertaining and insightful read. Talking Tico gives readers a distinct and new impression of this fascinating region.

17:00: We are honored to again welcome our friend, internationally recognized poet, playwright, screenwriter and essayist James Ragan back to the Globe for a poetry reading.

Dr. Ragan has been translated into 15 languages and appears in 30 anthologies world-wide. He has authored 9 books of poetry including In the Talking Hours, Womb-Weary, The Hunger Wall, Lusions, Selected Poetry, Too Long a Solitude, The World Shouldering I, Joyful Mysteries, and co-edited Yevgeny Yevtushenko: Collected Poetry. His honors include 3 Fulbright Professorships, 2 Honorary Ph.D’s, the Emerson Poetry Prize, 9 Pushcart Prize nominations, a Poetry Society of America Citation, London’s Troubadour Int. Poetry Prize finalist, and the Swan Foundation Humanitarian Award, among others. He has read for 7 international Heads of State and for the United Nations, Carnegie Hall, CNN, C-SPAN, PBS, NPR and audiences in China, Japan, India, England, France, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, and Slovakia, etc.

Dr. Ragan has, for 25 years, directed the Professional Writing Program at the University of Southern California and currently serves for 23 summers as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Poetry and Film at Charles University in Prague. He is the subject of the documentary, Flowers and Roots, (Arina Films, 2016), winner of 6 international awards including the Remi Platinum Award at the 49th Houston Int. Film Festival. His readings are full of energy and his poetry is moving and insightful, any writers or poets our there would surely appreciate such a reading.
